I spent 30 minutes watching this fellow, so I just HAD to share my favorite insect riddle.
BUT, this picture is not a TICK! Oh no... look again.
Halloween conjures up images of SPIDERS. Yesterday afternoon, I watched this SPIDER spinning its web next to the hummingbird feeder... such intricate web designs...

The decoration in the web of some orb-weaving SPIDERS serves a variety of purposes: it can be a warning so birds don't fly into the web; an attractant so insect-prey fly in on purpose; or an "um-brella" to shade the SPIDER from the hot sun.

I am really very fond of spiders because they get such a bad rap and they are so good for the garden. But...I must admit that I don't like to walk through a web at night and worry that a large garden spider is caught in my hair - Of course if that did happen he would probably be more scared than me. LOL
ReplyDeleteSpider webs can be so beautiful, especially with drops of dew on them. Black widows scare me a bit, but I find most spiders quite interesting to observe.
