FEELING DEEPLY...

Matilija Poppies ~ 5.30.11
"Happiness comes of the capacity to feel deeply,
to enjoy simplicity, to think freely, to risk life, to be needed."
~ Storm Jameson

 OJAI - Part II
OJAI - Part I

JPE & I ventured out of the artistic, downtown area of OJAI...

to  MEDITATION MOUNT ~ a place of quiet, beautiful views, gorgeous flowers...

...and someplace to "refresh" our senses before going to dinner.

Our day-trip had started at OJAI'S ART IN THE PARK, earlier in the morning...

Matilija poppies line the steep drive to the top of the road...

Outside the largest of the two meditation rooms stands the PEACE POLE.

It reads, MAY PEACE PREVAIL ON EARTH, in eight different languages.

Two MEDITATION ROOMS are open to the public for quiet, reflection, meditation, and prayer.

Pleasant, gentle breezes, swirling up the valley, cooled us from the thick heat of the downtown area.

Bees were buzzing...

A faint bong-bong-bong of the chimes floated through the quiet of the afternoon...

We stood in the coolness for a moment...

taking in the silence...

the beauty of the wood beams...

the ceiling arcing toward the skies...

the view through the windows drew us to the garden path...

A group of people were seated on the outdoor patio, enjoying the view...  quietly speaking in German... with a few words of English thrown into the conversation every now and then.

Volunteers were silently tidying the various areas of the garden path... the peacefulness was incredibly calming!

I watched as JPE sat on this bench, overlooking his former town, wondering what he was thinking?

of other visits to this site?

of the memorial service he conducted here ~ for a dear friend who passed before I met him?

http://meditationmount.org/
I don't know the answer... but, our visit to
MEDITATION MOUNT
was a time
to ENJOY SIMPLY, to FEEL DEEPLY,
and to THINK FREELY.

MEASURING UP... {GERMANY}

Market Square ~ Rothenburg, Germany ~ 6.28.05
I'm posting some German memories ~~~ Carola, my artistic blogger friend at carola bARTz is German, and about once a week, she posts a picture of something from Germany.  Check out the field of RED POPPIES!

JPE & I took a month long RICK STEVE'S TOUR during the summer of 2005, so I pulled out our travel journal & located a few pictures from our stop in Rothenburg, Germany.

Our tour guide, BEN CAMERON, took the group on an orientation walking tour before cutting us loose for a few hours to explore on our own. The Market Square is the location where all the action starts... great people watching! a central location to meet friends! or catch a tour! amazing architecture ~ most of the buildings were built by 1400; that's not a typo... this is a very medieval town!

The darker building (above) is the Town Hall & was rebuilt (between 1572-1578) after a fire destroyed a portion of the original building.

See the green arrow (top pic)?? that's where JPE & I were standing for the second pic.

Now, LooK at the picture ~ those two metal strips above my head are the town's MEASURING RODS... Medieval Germany had close to 300 independent little countries, each with its own "weights & measures." Merchants (& shoppers) knew this was the "local" standard measure for this area. The larger mark is the ROD (4.3 yards) and the smaller was the ELL (about the distance from your elbow to fingertips). Another measure (not shown in pic) is the SCHUH ~ or shoe, which was about 12 inches.

Notice the protruding cornerstone at the bottom of the arch? (see the black bag laying there) ~ these were located all over town & originally built to protect the buildings from reckless horse carts... I was forever tripping over them, in fact, I think that's what I was LAUGHING about when this picture was taken.

Another highlight, the Night Watchman's Tour... this "character" leads an evening tour every evening (April-December), starting at 8pm from the Market Square.

It's the best evening activity in Rothenburg! The Night Watchman takes people on a walk, his black lantern swinging wildly, as he spins tales of medieval times in the "walled city" ~ the oldest part of Rothenburg.

My camera was pretty ancient... so the pics could have been better!! But, having our travel journal helped bring all the memories back, as if they happened yesterday. Be sure to check out CAROLA'S poppies... such a vivid, RED!

AN OBSESSION...

Harvesting in the drizzling rain ~ 6.4.11

"The soul should always stand ajar,
ready to welcome the ecstatic experience."
~ Emily Dickinson, American poet
(December 10, 1830 - May 15, 1886)

EMILY DICKINSON, an American poet born in Amherst, MA, is said to have written over eighteen hundred poems, but fewer than a dozen were published during her lifetime. Before she died, she asked her sister, Lavinia (Vinnie) to burn any letters she found.

The depth of her writing was not realized until Lavinia found a hidden cache of her written work... reading through the notebooks of her poetry, Vinnie realized she could not destroy Emily's work!! The first book of poetry, The Poems of Emily Dickinson, was published in 1955, over 68 years after her passing. Oh... what a loss for the profession - especially, female writers - not having the ability to share her works with notable authors of her time.

Emily was introverted, lived a reclusive life, and was known for wearing WHITE (after Memorial Day?? yep! isn't that a fashion faux pas?)... of course, she lived in a simpler time, women didn't have closets bursting with clothes... As the result of her strange personality, Emily didn't need much, for she never left the bedroom at her family home - especially in her later years.

You might be asking what Emily has to do with strawberries?

NOTHING! absolutely nothing! but she wrote this quote which reminds me of the "ecstatic experience" of biting into a bright red, juicy strawberry... JPE & I are eating about three baskets of strawberries a week.

My favorite breakfast ~ a cup of strawberries with half of a sliced banana, topped with a cup of cottage cheese, and a sprinkle of homemade granola (loaded with flaxseed, sunflower seeds, oats, molasses = yummy!)!

 Okui's Berry Stand ~ Grover Beach ~ 6.4.11

After my computer session yesterday morning, I stood in line for a three-pack of freshly picked strawberries... and whispered a "THANK YOU" to all the harvesters working in the Saturday morning drizzle. There's nothing better than "freshly picked" produce!!!

AND - for the record, we had a "light rain / drizzle" from Friday evening until about an hour ago...

BREATH OF FRESH AIR!!!

OJAI ~ Art in the Park 5.29.11
"We should not forget to enjoy the experience
of daily creativity, whatever that may entail."
~ Diane Carter, American artist

Purple & Black Giraffe

Needing a breath of fresh air - JPE & I took a day trip to OJAI for the Art in the Park festivities (sponsored by OJAI Art Center)...

Having lived in OJAI for 15+ years, JPE was excited to find so much of this "artist enclave" untouched by mega-monster stores!

Art in the Park is held in Libby Park - located in the center of town!
OJAI Post Office
This adorable, moving giraffe (the head bobbed up & down) greeted us at the entrance of the festival.

Although the festival was small (due to the size of the park), 20-30 juried vendors displayed their artistic talents as the notes of live music swirled among the leaves of the trees.

OJAI ~ Libby Park fountain

OJAI averages 85-100 degrees in the summer, but Sunday's weather was gorgeous with billowy, white clouds, an occasional dark cloud, and with the sunshine peeking through to "shoo" the chill away.

The OJAI Post Office is an exquisite example of the architecture of the city... and everywhere you look, the city has maintained that ambience...

MADE in OJAI ~ unique gifts...

The shopping arcade includes numerous shops that have been in business for many decades!

More info can be found at the OJAI VISITORS BUREAU.

...oh, if you get tired of walking, you can catch a ride with the OJAI City Trolley (for free)!!!

RAINS, an up-scale gift store, with great prices, sells garden, kitchen and home items, as well as men's & women's clothing. I checked out a couple of pairs of Teva and Merrill shoes before deciding to wait until I can actually get my "SLOOOWLY-HEALING JONES FRACTURE" into something other than an athletic shoe. RAINS has been in business for 81 years!

Another business that visitors & residents frequent is the OJAI Coffee Roasting Company... of course, we had to stop for a cuppa tea & to "people watch."

One "local gent" was wearing brown hounds-tooth pants, with a yellowed, weathered dress shirt, a black bolo tie, covered by a beige flannel sportcoat, and a pair of shocking pink (women's, obviously) sunglasses. He had on a pair of Keen sandals with beige colored polka dotted socks... a black felt hat covered his very tanned, weathered face & his snow-white hair swirled from underneath the back of his hat... what a character! He had a scruffy, dirty dog on a pink leash that he tied under the edge of the cafe table legs outside the coffee shop. I considered "asking" to take a pic of the dog, (an excuse to capture his essence too), but he got his coffee & took off walking for home!

This is NOT the "colorful gent's" dog!

...but if you ever get to OJAI, you'll notice that "everyone" seems to have their dog with them!!

This dog was sitting near a bench at Art in the Park....

And - this teeny dog (with an attitude) was outside the OJAI Coffee Roasting Company...

JPE & I also drove by the two places he lived while in OJAI, and have decided we'd like to go back in the Fall (eh!! cooler temperatures) to celebrate our anniversary!

adorable from another angle ~ ART in the PARK Giraffe
Spending the day in fresh air, looking at pottery, woodblock prints, watercolor & oil paintings, jewelry, sculpture, photography, as well as "people watch" was just what we needed ~ before we head into our last few weeks of intensive, report-writing work before the school year closes for 2010-11.

How about posting a LINK (in the comment section) sharing your latest "creative experience"... would love to take a peek at your BLOG!!!

HOME AWAY FROM HOME??!

Mom's back patio ~ 5.6.11
"Why do we love certain houses, and
why do they seem to love us?
It is the warmth of our individual hearts
reflected in our surroundings."
~ T.H. RobsJohn-Gibbings, (1905–1976)
British-born architect and furniture designer

LOVE my mom's place - we (JPE & I) think of it as our home-away-from-home. Lovely swimming pool; tennis court; hot-tub; places to run & walk; close to the La Mirada Library & places to eat.

Mom & I just spent 90 minutes "chit-chatting" on the phone. We never run out of things to talk about!!!
