LAZEE DAZE...

Life leaps like a geyser for those who drill through the rock of inertia.

~ Alexis Carrel, French surgeon, awarded Nobel Prize in Physiology (1912).

WEEKWORD = INERTIA
My period of inertia is coming to an end!!

Yesterday's workshop, on California Common Core Standards, and another one Tuesday...
ummm,
my "summer brain" and "lazy days"
are coming to an end.

This picture was taken in the
SPRING
:: when the rains were done ::
:: the pollen had drifted to the pond surface ::
:: the ducks were sliding silently ::
:: through the thick muck ::
(I think the ducks were experiencing
SPRING INERTIA!)

Not the best picture!!
You could say I was experiencing
I-N-E-R-T-I-A
when thinking about
going for a camera run to find another picture!

Be QUICK about it,
and skip over to
to see who else has participated in
WEEKWORD!

COME PLAY ~ WEEKWORD...

:: hanging on ::
KATY @ CREATING MISERICORDIA  is hosting WEEKWORD. I'd lost contact with my WEEKWORD buddies & Carmen let me know that a WEEKWORD PORTAL had been set up, making it easier to find the word & host for the week.

If you haven't participated in WEEKWORD, it's easy, encourages you to "think outside the box," it's open to anyone with a blog, & you meet a lot of new bloggers when you visit their websites!

I hosted WEEKWORD at the beginning of 2011! you can CLICK HERE to learn about WEEKWORD....

The word this week is: I-N-E-R-T-I-A

As the summer winds down, I begin dragging my feet (ummm... enertia?), thinking about going back to work. The GREEN GUY represents my "current mood" ~ I'm "hanging-on" to every moment of my time off this summer!!

This picture is just a "teaser" to get you interested in participating... visit KATY & leave her a note that you'll post your interpretation of INERTIA.

There's a WEEKWORD button (sidebar) that Carmen created for the :: WEEKWORD PORTAL ::

You're welcome to add it to your blog ~ encourage participation ~ and post your interpretation of the word of the week (poem, drawing, picture, trivia, story, etc) on your blog. The host for the week will leave a list of all the participants, then you can visit & leave comments.

WEEKWORD = CATHARSIS

pic taken 5.19.11 (O'Connor Way)
 WEEKWORD = C-A-T-H-A-R-S-I-S

EMMA  has created a list of WEEKWORD participants over at her blog, THE GIFT SHED.

From a review of the participants in this week's postings, it seems many are experiencing the same "extreme change(s) in emotion" which is the "result of experiencing strong feelings (sorrow, fear, pity, or even laughter)."

I, too am feeling like I need something to "shake up my routine" ~ not sure what that is??
feeling directionless??
For the next few weeks, my schedule is a bit different - I'm watching LOLA this weekend... she's throwing her ball up in the air, trying to capture my attention!! will post pics later!

On Monday morning I'm headed to Sacramento to read grants... definitely different!

And I'm looking forward to some "restorative time" in July... one of the benefits of being employed in education!!!

We'll head to Big Bear Lake for some time to read, nap, scrapbook, blog and hopefully - HIKE!

BUT, in the meantime, when I'm feeling this way, I turn to NATURE...

tidying the flowerbeds
capturing some photos
sitting on the patio

ALL restorative!! and NO-COST!!

so, HOP, SKIP & JUMP
over to EMMA'S @ THE GIFT SHED to see the list of
WEEKWORD participants.

GYPSY-LIKE???

pics taken 5.6.11

WEEKWORD = GYPSY (GYPSIES)

Check in with CARMEN @ TAILS OF A BIOMOUSE!!!
to see who's posting this week... if this week's participants are like me, they may have "racked their brain" all week figuring out their interpretation of GYPSY.

When I see the word, GYPSY, the following words come to mind...

:: nomadic people ::
:: traveling caravans ::
:: colorful clothing ::
:: bangles, beads, glittery jewelry ::
:: entertainers, musicians, fortune tellers ::
:: laborers, farmworkers, tradesmen ::

Notice I listed the following: colorful clothing, bangles, fortune tellers?

GREEN, GAUZY SCARF (colorful clothing); BRASS, PURPLE & TURQUOISE (bangles, beads & glitter); TAROT CARDS (fortune teller)
AH-HA!!! this creates a GYPSY feeling... I think I dressed as a GYPSY for Halloween when I was 6-7 years old! I wonder if my Mom still has the picture?

WAITE TAROT CARD
LOVE THE BRILLIANT COLORS!!!
JPE has studied Tarot for 30+ years, so it's natural that I would be "curious" about this experiential, interpretive practice for uncovering answers to your questions.

Due to my creative nature, I'm particularly drawn to the colors & pictures on the cards - actually, I have two decks, Waite & Morgan Greer...

WAITE (left) & MORGAN GREER (right)
...both cards are the ACE of CUPS... similar, yet different. CUPS = emotions/feelings; ACES = start of something new! for me, this card is a "happy" card...

During our travels through Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary & Slovakia, we saw GYPSIES in the marketplaces & in the town squares. I thought of them as being family-oriented! but because they are nomadic, the children often don't attend school, so the schools tend to have a negative attitude toward GYPSY children (much like children of migrant farmers in California). But, I still admire them for their perseverance in keeping their culture & families alive, in what may feel like a disapproving environment.

Thanks CARMEN @ TAILS OF A BIOMOUSE for suggesting I take a journey through my travelogues to conjure up an image of GYPSY for this WEEKWORD!

Are you as curious about other interpretations? don't hesitate to check in with my vagabond, night traveling blogger, CARMEN for more about GYPSIES...
AND, I'm calling my mom to see if the Halloween pic of me, dressed as a GYPSY, is still in the photo box.

WEEKWORD = GYPSY

Prague, Czech Republic
WEEKWORD = G-Y-P-S-Y

Stop by CARMEN'S BLOG & let her know you'll be posting a WEEKWORD entry to your blog.

This sweet organ grinder stood, played & entertained sightseers on the Charles Bridge in Prague.
I wonder...

:: Did he ever have a "real monkey" ::
:: How many years has he been entertaining ::
:: Is he following in the footsteps of his family profession ::
:: Is he a gypsy or performer ::

What do you think?

Don't forget ~ Stop by CARMEN'S BLOG...

BOOK-MAKER (WEEKWORD)

handmade book

Sorry - this is a LATE post for WEEKWORD! No internet access for the past few days!!

Last Friday's WEEKWORD was B-O-O-K!!

destination = Washington DC
"OUR GREAT ADVENTURE" (Washington DC)
three generations = author, SLE & Mom/Nana
In March 2009, my mom & I flew to Washington DC... SLE was receiving a disability leadership award, and that was an excellent excuse to do some sightseeing.

The following pictures are some pages of the book I made to commemorate our travels!

map of Smithsonian Mall

during our trip, I collected paper ephemera from museums, tourist stands, etc... you know, the throw-away sort of information you pick up when traveling (NO COST!!)

added purchased travel stickers...

National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI)
personal pictures of favorite exhibits... we loved the National Museum of the America Indian!!! as some of you know, my dad was a California Mission Indian, so this museum really resonated with us in a spiritual way!

more pictures...

and hand-lettered "narrative" to remind us what we learned at the American Indian Museum!

I also included information from our hotel & it's location on the map...

Loved this quote, "Never go on trips with anyone you do not love." I traveled with my mom & we met SLE in Washington DC.
National Museum of American Indian prism & door
...the view of the prisms glistening on the wall of the main floor of the National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI)... The Mitsum Cafe is the best of the Smithsonian Museum cafes!!! don't miss the fry bread! excellent food!! (lower floor of the NMAI).
More info can be found HERE!

We also visited the American History Museum, Library of Congress, went to a play at Ford's Theater... there's so much to SEE in Washington DC!
Ford's Theater + play memorabilia
AND....
...it SNOWED during our visit ~ view of snow from hotel!
I LOVE making books to preserve memories!! another favorite book - Lydia's FIRST camping experience... perhaps I'll post pics of that book another time?

WEEKWORD = BOOK

not home yet!! so pulled these out of my suitcase...

SALLY @ SOW & SEW has taken it upon herself to post this week's WEEKWORD!

Anyone can participate - just contact the host know by leaving a message on HER BLOG!

SALLY will link everyone up on Friday, April 29th. Then, you visit the other participants to see exactly what they think of the WEEKWORD.

From my blurry picture post,
you might have guessed that this week's word is:
"B-O-O-K"

Sally must have been peeking in my suitcase??? we're headed home tonight, so I'm sitting in a San Francisco hotel room checking out the three books I got during my trip to Washington DC.

The World of Eric Carle - Deluxe Scrapbooking: Simple 1-2-3 (purchased at the Arlington COSTCO) - great scrapbook pages - which can be used in creating some of the "kid stuff" I'm planning. Cute stuff for ACE's classroom. Too inexpensive to pass up!

Lawyers, Lead On - Lawyers with Disabilities Share Their Insights
(my daughter, SLE, is one of the editors of this book). This book is just one of her major accomplishments, as she moves toward her passion for disability rights, advocating for policy change & representing clients with disabilities.
Hopefully the :: stars :: will align & she will be taking the California Bar Exam at the end of July. Will keep you posted.

The Pocket Paper Engineer: How to Make Pop-Ups Step by Step: Vol 1: Basic Forms (Carol Barton, Popular Kinetics Press)
I LOVE making pop-ups... and they are not as difficult as you might imagine! Of course, they aren't as exciting as Robert Sabuda's - you can check out ROBERT'S WORLD here!

The Smithsonian Museum of American History had an exhibit of POP-UP BOOKS, that is closing next month... saw this "HOW-TO" book in the museum gift shop & had to buy it! I wish I had also purchased The Pocket Paper Engineer: How to Make Pop-Ups Step-by-Step Vol 2: Platforms & Props (by the same author).

If you have any questions about how to participate in WEEKWORD, click on THIS LINK!!!

Come on - everyone has something to say about the word, "B-O-O-K"
